Do you ever sit around thinking, maybe even stressing about what to wear to a shoot and then how and where to even find chipper (that’s cheaper said with an accent) clothing?
Well, look no further!
A Girl’s Guide to Chipper (try saying it out loud, it’s fun!) Fashion:
Hats can be a great accessory in photo shoots. They add a little sumtin, sumtin or “flair” without over doing it.
There are numerous ways to pose using the hat-it’s about you, your style, and the hat that will make the shot.
Here are some shots of Vanessa wearing two different hats. The style of hat will usually add some flavor to the overall picture:
In these shots of Kathleen, only one hat was used but by posing her in a different way and by adding the hands we were able to get a different look:
The key is to find a hat that represents your style so you can rock it out during the shoot.
And like I always advocate, you can practice in the mirror with different hats and poses.
Below are some fall hat styles and did you all know that September is national fall hat month? I sure didn’t.
This week we are revisiting the topic of posing. I touched on it before here, but it’s a big part of my style- I would say 85% is posing and the rest I’ll capture as candid shots, and I feel it deserves a little more attention and detail. (I don’t expect my clients to know how to pose themselves, that’s my part as a photographer. However, if my clients can come prepared, it may make for a more comfortable and fun experience. Not to say it wouldn’t be otherwise)
There’s different types of poses that a photographer will do depending on the type of shoot. For example, a high fashion shoot will have poses that are big, lots of angles, and a lot of contorting the body to get those different angles and shapes. Although I love fashion and hope to shoot it one day, that is not the exact look I’m going for with my seniors… it’s more of a toned-down, water-downed version- kind of like Frozen Yogurt. Delicious! but without all the fat of ice cream!
I believe the key to posing is: PRACTICE
Practice, practice, and practice some more. A friend of mine received great advice from her acting coach (thank you Megan) which was to look in the mirror to see your facial expressions and your poses. You may feel like you’re giving off a certain look but in reality it’s not like that at all- TRUST ME! Lock your bedroom door if you have to and practice in the mirror.
The other ingredient to great posing is mixing your own personality in with it. The more you practice, the more you’ll feel comfortable enough to start adding in your own style and personality… which always makes the best pictures.
Most importantly Have fun with it!
Here are two great videos on posing:
I love Josie Maran:
Another great source for poses are magazines. Look through your favorite magazines and tear out the pictures that interest you and practice those poses.
This is Fashion Fridays. What is this all about you ask? Well, it is a weekly post where I will give out tips on a number of issues dealing with fashion: what to wear for a photo shoot, how to put on make up, how to style your hair for a shoot, make up I like and don’t like, things I love, etc, etc, etc. Let me tell you that I am not claiming to be a fashion expert by no means, shoot some days I don’t get out of my gym clothes- even if I’m not going to the gym. These are tips, ideas, inspirations, take what you like from these segments and make them your own.
This segment will be a mixture of my opinion and outside sources. I hope to have guest writers and contributors soon but for the most part it will be me.
One of the main reasons why this segment came about was all the questions I would get from my girls- What should I wear?, What do I do with my hair?, How much make up should I put on? etc, etc, etc. I could easily make a list of what to do, what to wear, and not wear but I think most people like to see what to do rather than just reading a list from a sheet of paper.
So, that’s how Fashion Fridays was born.
Without further ado,
Fall Photo Shoot:
Since we are transitioning into the fall season today will be focusing on fall-ish clothing along with tips on make up and curling your hair.
Fall-ish Clothing Ideas:
As you can see these clothes are fall-ish looking and would look great with a natural background consisting of deciduous trees- trees with leaves that change colors (I’m a science nerd so forgive me), grass, and maybe even a meadow.
If you are interested in the price or locating any of these items you can visit this site: Fall Shoot
You can also make your own collage as well. Be warned this site is addicting. http://www.polyvore.com/
Hair:
Styling your hair for a shoot can be difficult. Should you keep it natural, curl it, straighten it… That can only be answered by you and the type of hair you have. But to go along with the Fall-ish style theme I’m going to show you how to curl your hair to get a semi-curl/ messy curl look. Actually I’m not going to show you but instead Mizz Chievouz will be doing the honor. She is the hair and make up guru on you tube.
Fall inspired Make Up:
Choosing make up for a shoot can be difficult as well. You want to apply a little more than usual but not too much where you no longer look like yourself. Also anything really glittery can create extra shine in pictures that you don’t want. You should apply the make up you want to wear before the actual photo shoot to see if everything works well and flows. You can even take a picture with a regular camera to see if anything doesn’t look right and to see if you need more or less.
That concludes the first Fashion Fridays segment. Just a reminder, these are only tips and are meant for inspiration.
